Analysis by Dr. Leela
There has been much discussed, debated and even prayed over for an effective vaccine against Covid19 so that we can - to put it simply - get on with our lives. There are various issues that need to be considered for this. I give you below the facts as I see them, and leave you to make your own choices, which may be different to mine. Holy Family Hospital, Bandra has been duly approved as a Vaccination Centre.
The Govt is also set to launch version 2.0 of the CO-WIN Digital App. for self-registration of vaccine beneficiaries above 50 years of age and those with co-morbidities.
Covid19 is and RNA Virus, and part of the CORONA VIRUS GROUP that range from causing simple common cold, to other serious flu like illnesses like SARS or MERZ, which are severe respiratory distress syndromes that can result in death. We are all well aware of the wide range of symptoms that COVID19 can cause, in many just mild upper respiratory symptoms like a cold and sore throat with fever, and in others more serious complications of pneumonia and lung collapse.
This symptom response depends on various factors - the most significant reasons are:
The status of the host or the individual: i) One can have a good and moderate response, which means that one simply has upper respiratory symptoms like profuse nasal discharge, sneezing with moderate fever, headache, bodyache, sore throat. and if treated early enough, recovery is quick. ii) One can have a hypersensitive response, which means that one can easily develop high fever, chest symptoms, and inflammation in various organs of the body, including the blood vessels. Many young people have died from such an exaggerated allergic response of the body's immune system resulting in "vasculitis syndromes" where blood vessels get so inflamed that even clots are formed in various organs resulting in multi-organ failure. iii) One can have a poor response, which means that the body presents hardly any symptoms to overcome the virus, due to the person having various co-morbidities and being on a lot of maintenance medication. Co-morbidities include Diabetes, Blood pressure, Chronic Heart Disease, Chronic Lung Disease like asthma, COPD, etc. The immune system of the body is unable to deal with the virus, and the virus takes a upper hand, ultimately triggering a cytokine storm in response to viral toxins, this results in inflammatory changes all over the body, and especially in the lungs, causing edema that does not allow exchange of oxygen in the lungs. This is ultimately lung failure and then collapse. CHRONIC CONSTITUTIONAL HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT CORRECTS response type (ii) and (iii) over time.
The status of the CORONA VIRUS: The corona virus, like all viruses are capable of mutating. That is the original strain of virus and new strain of virus are slightly different to each other. Here there are two possibilities: i) The mutated strain is more virulent i.e. more dangerous ii) The mutated strain is less virulent i.e. less dangerous, and more similar to a common cold virus or a simple flu virus. Recent evidence suggests that these new mutations are not dangerous, though they may be easily spread. You could read here: https://www.homeopathy2health.com/forum/homeopathy-discussions/covid-19-mutations . In India, it appears that we have achieved "herd-immunity" which means that we have a collective protection against covid-19 that prevents the virus from getting stronger, while most have developed antibodies against it naturally.
Given this scenario, do we need a Vaccine? The simple answer is NO! But making a choice can be more complex than that and can depend on a multitude of social factors. 1. Presence of co-morbidities and senior age group can suggest that a vaccine can be protective, especially if one wants to get back into normal interaction and also be able to travel in public transport or especially for those who need to travel abroad. There may even be a compulsory vaccine advisory for foreign travel, a certificate of vaccination will be given.
FOR PEOPLE ON CONSTITUTIONAL CHRONIC HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT, which most of my patients are, the vaccine is NOT URGENT and they can afford to wait till the ideal vaccine is available. I have advised individual patients who need to take the vaccine, to opt for COVAXIN instead - details below.
2. FEAR can have a crippling effect, disabling some people from functioning normally. The vaccine offers a way out of this scenario and allows them to think beyond fear of disease. If one has a robust and balanced immune system response, taking the vaccine may be an acceptable choice.
EDIT: HERE IS A COMPARATIVE ON BOTH VACCINES: COVAXIN VS COVISHEILD
TWO VACCINES will be available for the general public: 1. Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield manufactured by Serum Institute of India prepared with LIVE virus. This virus produces a reaction within 48 hours. Fever, chills, body ache, headache, have been the common reactions that pass off in a couple of days.
2. Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin prepared from DEAD virus — against SARS-CoV2 infection — for restricted emergency use. One can wait for this vaccine which is overall safer and reactions are not expected. Most senior citizens should opt for this vaccine instead. The long term effects and efficacy of these vaccines has not been established. It is expected that newer vaccines will include the new Covid strains, or a booster dose to include new strains will be available later.
Make an individual choice to take the vaccine or not, for yourself and your family. My advise remains clear - the vaccine is NOT urgent for those on chronic constitutional homeopathic treatment as this treatment strengthens the immune system for an appropriate curative response. All symptoms following a VIRAL infection of any kind (including Covid-19) are COMPLETELY CURABLE with homeopathic remedies.
