There has been much discussed, debated and even prayer over (1) for an effective vaccine against Covid19 so that we can - to put it simply - get on with our lives. There are various issues that need to be considered for this. I give you below the facts as I see them, and leave you to make your own choices, which may be different to mine.
Covid19 is and RNA Virus, and part of the CORONA VIRUS group that range from causing simple common cold, to other serious flu like illnesses like SARS or MERZ, which are severe respiratory distress syndromes that can result in death. We are all well aware of the wide range of symptoms that COVID19 can cause, in many just mild upper respiratory symptoms like a cold and sore throat with fever, and in others more serious complications of pneumonia and lung collapse.
This symptom response depends on various factors - the most significant reasons are:
The status of the host or the individual: i) One can have a good and moderate response, which means that one simply has upper respiratory symptoms like profuse nasal discharge, sneezing with moderate fever, headache, bodyache, sore throat. and if treated early enough, recovery is quick. ii) One can have a hyperactive response, which means that one can easily develop high fever, chest symptoms, and inflammation in various organs of the body, including the blood vessels. Many young people have died from such an exaggerated allergic response of the body's immune system resulting in "vasculitis syndromes" where blood vessels get so inflamed that even clots are formed in various organs resulting in multi-organ failure. iii) One can have a poor response, which means that the body presents hardly any symptoms to overcome the virus, due to the person having various co-morbidities and being on a lot of maintenance medication. Co-morbidities include Diabetes, Blood pressure, Chronic Heart Disease, Chronic Lung Disease like asthma, COPD, etc. The immune system of the body is unable to deal with the virus, and the virus takes a upper hand, ultimately triggering a cytokine storm in response to viral toxins, this results in inflammatory changes all over the body, and especially in the lungs, causing edema that does not allow exchange of oxygen in the lungs. This is ultimately lung failure and then collapse.
The status of the CORONA VIRUS: The corona virus, like all viruses are capable of mutating. That is the original strain of virus and new strain of virus are slightly different to each other. Here there are two possibilities: i) The mutated strain is more virulent i.e. more dangerous ii) The mutated strain is less virulent i.e. less dangerous, and more similar to a common cold virus or a simple flu virus. Candidates can take the form of inactivated virus, viral vectors, nucleic acid, protein/peptide based and virus like particles.
